Temporary Duty (TD) Claims
What an Indian Armed Forces officer can claim when sent on temporary duty: eligibility, rates for road mileage, daily allowance, hotel, and halt, plus the documents needed to file.
Eligibility
Who qualifies and what counts as duty
Temporary Duty covers any movement away from a permanent duty station that is authorised by competent authority and not a leave absence. Typical examples include attending courses, conferences, board proceedings, courts of inquiry, escort duties, and short attachments to other formations.
The journey must be backed by a movement order, signal, or letter from the competent authority. Self-initiated travel is not reimbursable.
Rates
Road Mileage Allowance (RMA)
When an officer travels by his or her own conveyance on TD, the following per-kilometre rates apply:
- Own car: Rs. 16 per kilometre.
- Motorcycle / scooter: Rs. 9 per kilometre.
Rates
Daily Meal Allowance
Daily Meal Allowance is paid for each calendar day spent at the temporary duty station, including approved halts and journey days that fall after the first 24 hours.
- Pay Level 10 and above: Rs. 1500 per day.
- Below Pay Level 10: Rs. 1200 per day.
Rates
Hotel / Accommodation ceiling
Where service accommodation is not available and a hotel stay is booked, reimbursement is capped at Rs. 5400 per day for officers of the rank of Major (and equivalent) and above when the duty station is an X-class city. Lower ceilings apply for Y-class and Z-class cities; check your service-specific schedule.
Bills must be in the officer's own name and the non-availability certificate from the local Officers' Mess or Station HQ must be enclosed.

How journey days are counted
The day of departure from the parent station and the day of arrival back are counted as journey days. Daily Allowance for journey days is admissible at the same rate as the duty station, subject to actual time of departure and arrival.
If a journey straddles midnight, the calendar-day rule applies: each calendar day in transit attracts one day's allowance.
