Jeevan Pramaan: annual life certificate for defence pensioners
Your annual life certificate keeps your pension coming. Most defence pensioners can now do it in a few minutes from home with Jeevan Pramaan, or at a bank, a service centre or their own doorstep. This guide covers every option, how to find your SPARSH due date, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Direct answer
Jeevan Pramaan is the government's Aadhaar-based Digital Life Certificate. Defence pensioners can submit it from an Android phone with the Jeevan Pramaan face app, or at a bank, CSC or SPARSH Service Centre. If your pension is on SPARSH, your certificate is valid for 12 months from your last identification, so check your due date in SPARSH under Services > Identification. If your pension still comes through a bank, the usual window is November, or from 1 October if you are 80 or older. [1], [3], [12], [10]
About
What Jeevan Pramaan is
Every pensioner gives a life certificate once a year so that the pension continues without a break. Jeevan Pramaan, launched in November 2014, makes it digital: you authenticate with Aadhaar (face, fingerprint or iris), a Digital Life Certificate is created and stored online, and your pension disbursing agency picks it up from there. You get an SMS with your Pramaan ID. [1], [3]
It is optional: paper life certificates are still accepted. Since November 2021 a face authentication option has let pensioners do it with just an Android smartphone, with no fingerprint device. [3], [5], [4]
Step 1
Who must submit, and where it goes
Every defence pensioner and family pensioner submits an annual life certificate. Where it goes depends on how your pension is paid:
- Pension on SPARSH. PCDA (Pensions), Prayagraj pays you directly through SPARSH, and your life certificate is your SPARSH "annual identification". Completing it is a statutory requirement for continued, timely credit of pension. [8], [9]
- Legacy pension through a bank or DPDO. If you retired before 2016 and have not yet been migrated to SPARSH, carry on giving your life certificate the way you did in earlier years, to your bank or DPDO. [8]
- Family pensioners submit too, and can use Jeevan Pramaan and the face app. If you have remarried or are re-employed, give your certificate the conventional way instead. [3], [12]
Not sure which applies to you? Search for your PPO on "Know Your SPARSH PPO and Identification Status" on the SPARSH portal. Our SPARSH login guide explains signing in and fixing login problems. [9]
Step 2
When to submit
- On SPARSH: your own 12-month date. SPARSH accepts a life certificate at any time of the year, and it stays valid for 12 months from the identification date recorded in SPARSH. You do not have to wait for November, and submitting before your due date avoids the November rush. [12]
- Through a bank: November. Central Government pensioners paid through banks submit in November. The certificate is valid until 30 November of the next year. [3]
- Aged 80 or above: from 1 October. Pensioners aged 80 and above can submit from 1 October, a month before everyone else. [3], [4]
- November camps. The Department of Pension & Pensioners' Welfare has run a nationwide Digital Life Certificate campaign from 1 to 30 November every year since 2022, with camps by banks, India Post Payments Bank and CGDA. This year's camp list is announced by the department; check with your bank or the SPARSH home page. [4], [6]
Step 3
Check your SPARSH identification due date
- Signed in: go to Services > Identification. It shows your last identification date and your next due date. [10]
- Without signing in: use Know Your SPARSH PPO and Identification Status on the SPARSH home page. [9], [11]
- From your email or pension slip: the next due date is in the monthly pension details SPARSH emails you, and on your pension slip. If you do not get these emails, register your email in SPARSH. [12], [11]
After you submit, allow 48 hours before checking the status again. [9]
Step 4
Every way to submit
| Option | How |
|---|---|
| Jeevan Pramaan face appAt home, on an Android phone | Install UIDAI's AadhaarFaceRD app and the Jeevan Pramaan app from the Google Play Store, then scan your face. No fingerprint device is needed. Steps are below. [3], [2], [4] |
| Jeevan Pramaan with a fingerprint or iris deviceAt home, on a Windows PC or Android phone | Use the Jeevan Pramaan PC or mobile app with a registered (RD) fingerprint or iris device and its RD service. The Jeevan Pramaan portal lists supported devices. [1], [3], [2] |
| Inside SPARSHOnline, SPARSH pensioners only | Sign in to SPARSH and go to Services > Identification. Choose Digital Life Certificate (Aadhaar) or download a Manual Life Certificate form, get it signed by an authorised person and upload it. [10], [11] |
| SPARSH Service Centre or Common Service CentreIn person | SPARSH Service Centres run by banks and the Defence Accounts Department, and Common Service Centres (CSCs), complete identification for you. Find one with the Service Centre Locator on the SPARSH portal or findmycsc.nic.in. [11], [8] |
| Jeevan Pramaan CentreIn person | Centres are run by CSCs, banks and government offices. Use 'Locate a Centre' on jeevanpramaan.gov.in, or SMS JPL followed by your pincode (for example JPL 110003) to 7738299899. [1], [3] |
| Your pension bank branchIn person | Pension disbursing banks accept life certificates, digitally or on paper. This is also the fallback if a Jeevan Pramaan certificate will not generate. [3] |
| India Post doorstep serviceAt home, through your postman | India Post Payments Bank generates a Digital Life Certificate at your door, by fingerprint or the Face RD app, for a nominal Rs 70. Armed Forces pensioners are covered. Keep your Aadhaar number, mobile number, PPO number and pension account details ready. [7], [3] |
| Public sector bank doorstep bankingAt home | The public sector banks' Doorstep Banking service collects life certificates for a nominal Rs 75. Book through the Doorstep Banking app, doorstepbanks.com, or toll-free 1800-121-3721 or 1800-103-7188. [3] |
| Digital Life Certificate campsIn person, in November | DoPPW runs a nationwide Digital Life Certificate campaign every November with banks, India Post Payments Bank, pensioners' associations and CGDA, which holds camps for defence pensioners. Check your bank, the SPARSH home page or PIB for this year's camps. [4], [6] |
| Living abroad (SPARSH)By email | SPARSH cannot be opened from outside India. Email a life certificate signed by an authorised official to sparshnri.dad@gov.in. See the SPARSH guide for who can sign. [12] |
Before you start. Keep your Aadhaar number, mobile number, PPO number and pension bank account number handy. Your Aadhaar must be linked to the bank account your pension is paid into. [3], [7]
If you are unwell or bed-ridden. The face app or a doorstep service is the easiest route. Your bank can also send an officer to your home or hospital if you send the branch a medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner. [3]
Step 5
Jeevan Pramaan face app, step by step
- Check your phone. You need an Android phone, an internet connection and at least 500 MB of free space. The Jeevan Pramaan site currently lists Android 10 or above for the mobile app. Your Aadhaar must be linked to the bank account your pension is paid into.
- Install AadhaarFaceRD. Search the Google Play Store for UIDAI's AadhaarFaceRD app and install it. It has no icon and runs in the background; you can see it under Settings > App info.
- Install Jeevan Pramaan. Install the Jeevan Pramaan app from the Google Play Store, open it and allow the permissions it asks for. The app can be switched to Hindi and other languages.
- Register the operator (one time). Enter the operator's Aadhaar number, a mobile number and email, then the OTP. The pensioner can be the operator, or a family member can be. The mobile number need not be linked to Aadhaar. One operator can generate certificates for many pensioners.
- Fill in the pensioner's details. Name as in Aadhaar, type of pension, Sanctioning Authority, Disbursing Agency, PPO number and pension account number. If you generated a certificate last year, these may already be filled in.
- Scan the pensioner's face. Read the on-screen instructions, keep the face inside the circle and blink when asked. Front or rear camera both work.
- Note your Pramaan ID. On success, the screen shows your Pramaan ID and an SMS confirms it. Keep it to download the certificate later.
What to select as a defence pensioner
| Your pension | In Jeevan Pramaan |
|---|---|
| Pension paid through SPARSH | Sanctioning Authority: Defence – PCDA (Pension) PrayagrajDisbursing Agency: SPARSH – PCDA (Pension) PrayagrajPPO and account: Your SPARSH PPO number, and the bank account your pension is paid into [11], [9], [8] |
| Legacy pensioner not yet on SPARSH (pension through a bank or DPDO) | Sanctioning Authority: Your sanctioning office, for example Defence – PCDA (P) Allahabad, Defence – Jt.CDA(AF) Subroto Park or Defence – PCDA (Navy) MumbaiDisbursing Agency: Your pension disbursing bank or DPDOPPO and account: Your PPO number and pension account number [8] |
Older lists show Allahabad instead of Prayagraj; it is the same PCDA (Pensions) office. Pick the entry that matches your PPO.
Step 6
After you submit
- Keep the SMS with your Pramaan ID. You can download a PDF of your certificate with it from the Jeevan Pramaan website, which is also how you confirm it was generated. [1], [3]
- Your bank or SPARSH sees the certificate after a few days, not instantly. On SPARSH, check your identification status after 48 hours. [3], [9]
Step 7
If you miss it, and how pension restarts
A missed life certificate pauses your pension; it does not end it. Submit as soon as you can, by any of the ways above.
- On SPARSH. Pension may be stopped until identification is done. Once a delayed identification is completed, all applicable pension arrears are paid. [11], [10]
- Through a bank. For Central Government pensions paid through banks, if no certificate is in by the end of November, pension from December is not paid. Once the certificate is updated, pension resumes with arrears from the next payment. After three years or more without a certificate, pension restarts only after sanction by the competent authority, so do not let it run that long. [3]
Step 8
Common errors and fixes
The face scan keeps failing
Sit in good, even light against a plain background, with only one person in the frame. Face the camera straight on, hold still at a comfortable distance and blink when asked. If your Aadhaar photo shows you in glasses, wear them; if not, take them off. A slow connection can also cause failures. [3]
Authentication fails even with good light
Check that your Aadhaar or Aadhaar biometrics are not locked. A locked Aadhaar or locked biometrics stop the scan. Also check the phone meets the requirements: Android version, camera and at least 500 MB free. [3], [1]
The certificate will not generate
The most common reason is wrong details: PPO number, account number or the Sanctioning and Disbursing Authority. Check them against your PPO and try again. If it still fails, submit your life certificate at your bank branch. [3]
I am re-employed or have remarried
Face authentication is not used for re-employed or remarried pensioners. Submit your life certificate the conventional way to your pension disbursing authority (on SPARSH, a Manual Life Certificate signed by an authorised person). [3], [10]
My fingerprint device does not work
Jeevan Pramaan accepts only registered (RD) biometric devices. Install the RD service from your device maker, or use the face app instead. SPARSH notes that older L0 fingerprint devices are being phased out. [3], [9]
I submitted, but my status has not changed
A Digital Life Certificate reaches the pension disbursing agency after a few days. SPARSH asks you to check your identification status 48 hours after you submit. Download your certificate with your Pramaan ID from jeevanpramaan.gov.in to see it was generated. [3], [9]
